Approximations to capital productivity using data from IBGE Agribusiness Censuses aggregating the economic activities in three groups, namely agriculture, husbandry and others, are presented.

It is concluded that the capital productivity has decreased in the 1970-1986 period and it has had some recovery in 2006 considering capital stock with the land factor or without it.

The article analyzes the construction of hydroelectric power plants facing the challenge of eliminating poverty and at the same time mitigating the environmental impacts; this means sustainable development stimulation. The electric sector, due to its importance to the social-economic development and its connection with the environmental sphere has a central role in the promotion of this type of development.
